The Ferrochrome Plant in Tornio offers an exciting opportunity to complete a master’s thesis that provides valuable input to our ongoing yield improvement initiatives in ferrochrome production. Thesis Purpose
The objective of the thesis is to investigate and evaluate the mass and chromium balance within the Ferrochrome Plant’s material handling process. Material handling includes casting, cooling, crushing, and screening of ferrochrome, as well as slag handling activities performed by our contractor.

The work will partially take place on-site in Tornio, providing hands-on exposure to industrial operations. Some parts of the thesis can be carried out remotely.

 

Your thesis work will include:
•    Studying FeCr process stages across SAF1, SAF2 and SAF3 furnaces: casting, cooling, crushing, screening, and slag handling
•    Determining material and chromium flows from incoming concentrates to final products
•    Building a mass and chromium balance model for FeCr production using a suitable modelling tool
•    Creating campaign-based balance modelling for special product grades
•    (Optional) Completing a literature review section based on your university requirements

We are looking for a candidate who has:
•    A completed bachelor’s degree in Process or Environmental Engineering, with master’s studies nearing completion (good academic performance appreciated)
•    Excellent communication and teamwork skills
•    High initiative and ability to work independently on problem-solving tasks
•    Solid technical writing skills
•    Fluency in Finnish and English, spoken and written
