Metallurgist Process Engineer

In our Melt Shop team we’re looking for a Process Engineer with background in Metallurgy, Material Science, Chemistry or similar field and support our Electric Arc Furnace and Argon Oxygen Decarburization areas in our mill located in Calvert, Mobile County, Alabama.

Use data from internal sources e.g. intranet databases, process specific operational systems, raw material inventory management system.

Job qualifications and experience requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in Metallurgical, Material Science, Chemistry, or related field preferred
  • Working knowledge of mass balance calculations, oxidation/deoxidation, slag formation and fluidization, alloying of stainless steel required
  • 5+ years’ experience in melting and refining metals industry required, with production management or engineering background
  • Working knowledge of EAF/AOD* processes 
  • Experience assessing industrial processes and taking measurements and data 
  • Proven knowledge in equipment calibration and maintenance monitoring
  • Demonstrate experience managing process and capital improvement projects 
  • 6S, TPM and ISO beneficial
  • Knowledge of material handling systems, inventory management
  • MS Excel proficiency required. Any other visualization tools is plus

 Some responsibilities for the role:

  • Monitor and improve the efficiency, output, and safety of manufacturing processes for Raw Materials, Electric Arc Furnace and Argon Oxygen Decarburization through observations and measurements, as well as collecting and interpreting data relevant to the EAF/AOD* processes from other technical and operating personnel
  • Use historical data to make improvements to Heat schedules as well as mill setup to solve quality problems. Work closely Production Planning and Bucket Loading Specialist for quality control of process materials
  • Equipment calibration and maintenance monitoring
  • Manage process and capital improvement projects. Develop new and improve current cost-efficient processes and methods that support the company’s goal of time critical and quality-focused stainless-steel production
  • Researches the purchase of equipment or upgrades to existing equipment to support operational needs
  • Control consumption, yield, and productivity figures
  • Create/edit/maintain necessary documentation (e.g. SOP’s, or work instructions)
  • Assume responsibility for safety/environmental issues and ongoing performance of processes
  • Other duties, as assigned 
  • Availability to work on-site every day

 

Physical requirements: 

  • Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards
  • Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs and ramps) same as ability to walk long distances and demonstrate good balance on uneven terrain or maneuvering obstacles
  • Ability to withstand exposure to elevated ambient temperature for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat
  • Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, vibrations, dust and asphalt
  • Must be able to work in a high noise environment where the use of hearing protection is required
  • Ability to frequently use hand or fingers to handle or feel objects/materials
  • Ability to work in areas with strong magnetic fields
  • Bend, twist, lift, stand, walk, reach, see, move, and hear as required by specific position 
  • Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms
  • Must be able to communicate utilizing radios, phones and/or intercom systems 
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work including lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. utilizing proper lifting techniques
  • Ability to safely use power and hand tools 
  • Ability to safely operate powered industrial vehicles and equipment for tasks and diagnostic purposes, including overhead cranes. 

 

Salary range: USD 99,400 – 110,400 base yearly.
