Laboratory Scientist

We are looking for a Laboratory Scientist to join our Green Metals Team in the Greater Boston Area, Massachusetts, USA. 

 

In Outokumpu’s Green Metals Team, we aim to leverage the best available avenues in both state of the art technologies and emerging disruptive innovations to establish a new paradigm in environmentally sustainable metals production.  Our scientific and engineering efforts are experimentally focused on inventing and validating innovative solutions for decarbonization and new product development in extractive and chemical metallurgy.  We are seeking a decidedly motivated and creative laboratory scientist with a passion for hands on problem solving to join our Team.  Together, we will collaboratively address technical challenges in ferroalloy and stainless steel manufacturing.  As a member of our Team, you will be key part of our effort to design, demonstrate, and implement new mineral treatment and metal smelting processes for a range of materials and applications.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent occupational experience in one of the following areas: chemistry, metallurgy, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering, process operations, mining, or a related field
  • 2-3 or more years of hands-on experience with high temperature materials processing in a laboratory, industrial, or academic setting
  • Creativity and a strong desire to innovate in the metals industry.

We desire candidates with some cross section of these skills and proficiencies:

  • Safe laboratory practices, hot work practices, and chemical hygiene
  • Strong teamwork, organization, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Laboratory furnace, tube reactor, or fluidized bed setup, operation, and maintenance
  • Laboratory solids handling equipment setup, operation, and maintenance
  • Laboratory scrubber setup, operation, and maintenance
  • Laboratory gas handling, inert atmosphere processing, and vacuum system setup, operation, and maintenance
  • Ceramics and graphite fabrication using milling machines, lathes, or similar equipment
  • Thermocouple fabrication
  • Tig welding
  • Familiarity with the chemistry of slags, mattes, and liquid metals
  • Familiarity with high temperature experimental methods
  • Mounting, grinding and polishing of mineral and metallurgical samples

Your role would include:

  • Setup and operation of laboratory pyrometallurgical, electrometallurgical, and melt-based experiments for a range of processing conditions and chemistries
  • Fabrication of ceramic and graphite components for proof of concept testing of new experimental designs
  • Laboratory gas handling and vacuum system setup and maintenance
  • Furnace setup and maintenance
  • Preparation of chemical samples for experimental analysis
  • Collaborating with science and engineering team members for establishment of best laboratory, engineering, and operational practices

Salary Range: US $ 75,200 - 104,700
